Leonard Cohen was brought up in the wealthy Westmount area of Montreal.
His father died when Cohen was only nine years old.
Music was part of Cohen's teen life and he played in a country and western band.
The poetry of Cohen was first recognized when he was a student at McGill University.
He was awarded a special grant which allowed him to travel in Europe.
While residing in Hydra, Cohen not only wrote poetry but started writing novels.
He became a noted Canadian author in the 1960's.
Cohen decided to move to United States so that he could enter the music field.
He was influenced to some degree by the music of Bob Dylan and Joan Baez.
Cohen's songs were highlighted by the poetic lyrics he had perfected over the years.
He recorded several albums during the 1980's and he became a unique international star.
A Juno award was amongst the honours Cohen has won during a truly artistic career.
