Glenn Herbert Gould
Born: September 25, 1932
Died: October 4, 1982
Place of Birth: Toronto, Ontario
Major Notes:
Glenn Gould was a remarkable pianist and music interpreter that classified him as one of the greatest musicians of the 20th century.
He was the only child of parents who both sang and played musical instruments sensing their child was unique when it came to music.
Gould could read music at age three and by five he was creating small piano compositions.
His parents did not push his musical abilities but let him grow in musical depth by himself with his mother as his first piano teacher.
He entered what is now called the Royal Conservatory of Music of Toronto at age ten and made noteworthy progress in this institute .
At age 14, Glenn Gould made his first appearance as a soloist with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra playing a Beethoven piece.
By age 15, he played his first entire concerto in public as a professional musician with the same orchestra.
Over the next few years, Gould gave concerts worldwide but also did radio recitals and studio recordings.
He was the first Canadian to appear as a solo artist in what was then called the Soviet Union.
He sometimes wore gloves, hummed, and made unusual body movements in his piano recitals.
Gould's interpretation and playing of some musical pieces upset many critics of the day but his listeners found his work refreshing and original.
In 1964, he gave his final public concert appearance in Los Angeles, California, announcing he wanted to concentrate on the recording studio.
Gould preferred working in the recording studio over just playing the piano because of the leeway it gave him in manipulating sounds and notes.
Until his early death, Gould continued making albums and producing radio and television programs.
Glenn Gould received four Emmy Awards and, in a year after his death, was accepted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame.
