Catriona Le May Doan began skating at 10 years old.
Although she lived on the prairies in Canada, her family travelled and lived in such places as Brazil and Scotland.
She loved skating and in time developed a fondness for speed skating.
She is a devoted Christian and feels this provides an added support in her efforts.
Le May Doan is sometimes called The Fastest Woman in the World.
Over the years, she has made or broken no fewer than ten world records for her sport.
Catriona became a 2001 inductee into the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame.
In 2002, Catriona was named Canada's Athlete of the Year and received an honorary degree from the University of Calgary.
She has been named Canada's Female Athlete of the Year on at least three occasions.
Le May Doan is admired by Canadians for both her skating and off-ice personality.
