When she was just a youngster McLachlan was given the opportunity to take voice lessons.
In addition, Sarah McLachlan was introduced to classical piano and guitar lessons to round out her musical foundation.
In high school, she joined a band which had an opportunity to play at Dalhousie University.
During this performance, McLachlan's performance was impressive and she was offered a recording contract by a Vancouver-based company, Netterk.
McLachlan's parents convinced her to continue her school studies at the time and it was two years later that she finally inked the contract.
She moved to Vancouver and her first album Touch was considered a success.
It was her second album, the 1991 Solace, that showed major improvements in her songs and brought her international attention.
After a tour promoting the album, Sarah McLachlan agreed to go to Thailand and Cambodia to work on a special Canadian documentary dealing with poverty.
This assignment emotionally affected McLachlan and helped motivate her in working on her next album.
Over the next few years, McLachlan wrote and recorded numerous songs that were internationally acclaimed.
In 1997, she planned and executed a brief special tour by all female artists called Lilith Fair.
This led to Lilith Fair concerts where the funds collected was divided amongst a number of charity groups involved in helping abused women.
McLachlan also married Ashwin Sood, her regular drummer, in 1997.
During the next several years, McLachlan went on to sing and play at various concerts and TV shows.
Much of the money she brought in was again divided up amongst various charities.
Sarah McLachlan has been awarded at least eight Juno awards and three Grammy awards.
