Donald Sutherland, father of Kiefer Sutherland, is one of Canada's best known movie actors.
Although born in Saint John, he actually grew up in Nova Scotia and graduated from high school in Bridgewater.
When he was just 14, he began working as an announcer at the local radio station.
Following high school, he studied Engineering at the University of Toronto but found he had a great interest in Drama as well.
After graduation, he moved to England where he studied at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art'
Donald Sutherland began his professional acting career working in England on stage and on television.
His height and facial appearance opened a number of low grade movies in which he was often cast as a sinister character.
His big break came in 1967 when he was asked to play in a potential hit war movie called The Dirty Dozen.
Sutherland then appeared in two more war movies, MASH and Kelly's Heroes, playing parts along with such stars as Lee Marvin and Clint Eastwood.
In the 1970's, Sutherland joined forces with Jane Fonda in protesting the Viet Nam war.
During the next four decades, Sutherland was a prolific actor starring in many movies and television shows.
His acting roles seemed to get better as he got older and Golden Globe and Emmy awards came his way.
In the year 2000, Donald Sutherland was honoured by being inducted into Canada's Walk of Fame.
